After months of hunting we where able to get our hands on new synchros AND new bearings/seals for the non-rs six speed transmissions. And when we say that, we mean we bought enough to put a majority of the parts on backorder from our supplier.

We are waiting to hear back from a local transmission specialist, BUT, we will soon be offering 6 speed rebuild services, including offering already re-built transmissions.

For those who are un-aware; Nissan's FWD 6-speeds are known for chewing through 3rd gear synchros. We replace 3-4 transmissions here at our shop per year. And that is just local customers, or customers who drive to us to get them put in.

Previously the only way to fix a bad synchro was to buy either a new or used transmission.

Used transmissions range from $500-1300 and 7/10 times the synchros in them are also bad. And at 10 hours of labor to install them, that's not ideal.

New transmissions are $3200 on partsdeal PLUS $200+ in shipping, OR $3800 at a local dealership. This is insane, considering what your buying.

So. We went on the hunt and found all the pieces needed to rebuild these. We are also in the process of getting carbon fiber synchros made for the hardcore racers out there.

The rebuild services will be broken down like this (all costs are estimated right now and are subject to change):

Core Charge: $900. You get this back when we get your old transmission to us. If you are sending us your transmission, obviously this is waived.

Basic Rebuild: new synchro's and seals. This will be the most affordable option. The cheapest way to get your six speed back in the fight. ($2199.99)

Advanced Rebuild: new synchro's, seals, and bearings. This will practically make the transmission like new. Aside from new gears, which are not usually an issue. ($2499.99)

Race Car Rebuild: new synchro's, seals, bearings, and a Wavetrac Diff. LSD power on top of a rebuild. ($3599.99)

Because You Can Rebuild: assuming we get the CF synchro's made up, this will be the ultimate 6 speed build. ($ A Lot)

Each transmission will get fully inspected upon tare down. If any other components are damaged, then the customer will have the option to use one of our cores, get us another core, or see if nissan can get the needed component. In our experience; nothing else is usually wrong with these, outside of the components listed.

Shipping from us to LA is ~$220.
Shipping from us to Houston is ~$197
Shipping from us to Detroit ~$169
Shipping from us to Miami ~$183
You get the idea.

Shipping to us may sound like a challenge, or not worth the time, but if we are shipping a transmission to you first, that gives you the packaging to send it back to us.

If you are shipping the transmissions to us, Uline.com has ready made shipping crates for only $86, if you do not want to make your own.

So instead of paying $3400 on the LOW side just to get rid of a gear grind issue, you could pay as little as $2450 (assuming your in California).

That's a potential savings of $1150+.

"But what if I want to have a local shop rebuild mine for me and skip the shipping stuff." We will be offering replacement parts for sale separately on our website as well.

If you want to take a drive up here, we only charge $750 to install 6 speed transmissions. Not including swapping the clutch/flywheel. Does include fluids. It typically takes us 1 business day to do this, assuming nothing pops up as things are being done.

We will have Basic and Advanced rebuilt transmissions in stock. Race Car rebuilds will be made per order.

Warranty: We will offer a 12 month 12,000 mile limited warranty on the transmissions we send out, not the labor. If you have a problem in that time, we will arrange getting you a replacement unit. If we find that improper fluid was used or the damage is caused from improper operation, the customer will be responsible for the replacement.

The synchro that fails the most often looks like this when it is new:
Hand Computer keyboard Input device Peripheral Organ
Hand Computer keyboard Jaw Input device Peripheral
Automotive tire Hood Tire Finger Input device

All of the replacement parts are in. We now have them for sale on the website. We will be getting final prices and time frames together for rebuilding the transmissions shortly.

This is great, am I correct to asume that you can use that synchro for every gear? or is it just for 3rd gear? I notice a slight crunch on 3rd very rarely and it's good to know you have the part for sale.

It's not really worth it to invest in that. They only sold ~10,000 of them. Assume by now 1/3 of them are totaled or written off in some other way. I have personally parted out 3 totaled ones in the past 2 years, there have been on average of 2 a week on co-part for the past 6 months.

After that math its only about 6,700 of them left. Of those, more than half would just get a new or replacement trans from LKQ or nissan. Leaves around 3300. Half of those people would more than likely just trade the car in or sell it if it developed some sort of gear issue. So 1700 potential customers on the high end. Of that i doubt more than 5 of them would actually send us a trans to rebuild haha.

If someone came to me with a bad RS trans, I would just swap in a base model with an LSD anyway. Arguably better gear ratios for most daily driving. Easier to acquire axles and seals. Cheaper to replace and repair in general, and you would have a waaaaay better lsd than the RS trans has. I've done that to 2 cars now.

Our shop race car is a 15 RS with only 40k miles on it, and the first thing we did was rip the RS trans out of it. And at over 500 horsepower (shhh we haven't released all the info on it yet), it has never had an issue as far as the transmission goes.

Understandable, thank you for the info and the reply.
